Greece is a country in southeastern Europe situated on the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula. The country has borders with Albania, the Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north, and Turkey to the east. The Aegean Sea lies to the east and south of mainland Greece, while the Ionian Sea lies to the west. Greece consists of a mountainous, peninsular mainland jutting out into the sea at the southern end of the Balkans, the Peloponnesus peninsula and 1400 islands (Corfu, Crete, Lesbos, Rhodos, Thassos etc.). Mount Olympus with Mytikas peak (2917 m) is the highest hill in the country. |

Greece has a Mediterranean climate with plenty of sunshine, mild temperatures and a limited amount of rainfall. In summer, the dry hot days are cooled by seasonal winds called the meltemi, while mountainous regions have generally lower temperatures. The winters are mild in lowland areas, with a minimum amount of snow and ice, but mountains are usually snow-covered. |

Greece has a rich and varied wildlife. The regions of central and northern Greece are the habitats of the brown bear, wolf, jackal, and wild boars. Foxes, squirrels, and weasels are common on the mainland. Greece has several species of snakes, most of them poisonous. The birdlife is an eldorado for those interested in birds, a large number of migratory birds pass over Greece on the way to feeding grounds in Africa or to the nesting sites in Europe. The marine life in Greece is also under threat from tourism, Europe’s rarest mammal, the monk seal, once prolific in the Mediterranean. Another species of marine life under threat from the encroaching tourist development is the loggerhead turtle. Their nesting sites are on the islands of Crete, Zakynthos and Kefallonia also around the coast of Peloponnese. The waters around Greece are the home to dolphins too. The variation of plants on Greece is exceptional. The island of Crete and the Peloponnese region of Greece are the areas with the largest profusion of wild flowers. |
