Madagascar

Madagascar is an island nation in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of Africa (Mozambique). The main island, also called Madagascar, is the fourth-largest island in the world. The capital, Antananarivo, is high up in the Hauts Plateaux near the island’s centre. The island's highest peak, Maromokotro, at 2,876 m, is found in the Tsaratanana Massif, located in the far north of the country.

Madagascar has two seasons: a hot, rainy season from November to April; and a cooler, dry season from May to October. There is, however, great variation in climate owing to elevation and position relative to dominant winds.

Madagascar is home to 5% of the world's plant and animal species, of which more than 80% are endemic to Madagascar. There are 3000 endemic species of butterfly, lemurs, racoons, monkeys, marmots, bushbabies and sloths. There is a similar diversity of reptiles, amphibians and birds (especially ducks), and also all levels of plant life.

There are some fine places in Madagascar where you can enjoy the fine white sandy beaches, fringed with palms and local bars. Most famous dive area is Nosy Be, NW of Madagascar Island. But in the north and northeast there are numerous options.
